WORLD DOWN SYNDROME DAY 2023

On March 21st, the world celebrated World Down Syndrome Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness and understanding of Down syndrome and advocating for the rights, inclusion, and well-being of people with Down Syndrome.

Down Syndrome is a genetic condition caused by the presence of an extra chromosome. It affects approximately 1 in 800 births worldwide and is associated with intellectual disability and certain physical characteristics.

This year’s theme was “With Us Not For Us”, a message which is key to a human rights based approach to disability.

Around the world, there were numerous events and activities that took place to commemorate World Down Syndrome Day. In many countries, landmarks and buildings were  lit up in blue and yellow, which are the colours associated with Down syndrome awareness.

In support of the observation staff of CCT and 284 Media threw their support behind the ‘Lots of Socks’ initiative.

CCT Staff Participate in “Lots of Socks” Campaign

The aim of the ‘Lots of Socks’ campaign is to raise awareness of Down syndrome among the community.  The idea is to start a conversation, so when people ask you about your socks you can tell them, “I’m wearing them to raise awareness of Down syndrome”.

The United Nations has recognized World Down Syndrome Day since 2012 and has been a strong advocate for the inclusion and rights of people with disabilities, including those with Down syndrome. The UN has designated 2021-2030 as the Decade of Action for the Sustainable Development Goals, which includes a commitment to promoting the full and equal participation of people with disabilities in society.

World Down Syndrome Day is an important opportunity to recognize the diversity and contributions of individuals with Down syndrome and to advocate for their rights and inclusion in all aspects of society.
