The General Election in the British Virgin Islands came to an end late Monday evening with the Virgin Islands Party winning the pluarity of the 13 seats with six, but still one seat short of automatically qualifying to form a new government.
That is because the Virgin Islands Constitution states that a minimum of seven seats is needed to successfully form a new government.
The National Democratic Party and the Progressive Virgin Islands Movement each had three seats, while the one-man Progressives United party won its seat.
Supervisor of Elections Scherrie N. Griffin read the final tally to end the proceedings.
The results of Monday’s election mean one of three things will have to occur for a new government to form.
The first, an elected member will have to leave their respective party and join the VIP to make seven; the second, the two progressive parties will have to team up with the NDP to form a coalition government; or the third, either of the three parties will have to team up with the VIP to form a coalition government.
