Nine motor scooters were seized by the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) on Monday and one rider detained after a failed attempt to flee.
This is according to information obtained from the RVIPF in a media release on Wednesday, which said the operation was aimed at disrupting the practice by scooter riding groups to form noisy, illegal motorcades, particularly on the western end of the island.
The police also provided details on Monday’s operation which led to the seizures.
“One of the larger groups was blocked in the Ballast Bay area; the riders then abandoned their scooters on private properties in the area and ran. A total of nine scooters were confiscated and are now in police custody. One of the riders was detained after sustaining injuries in his attempt to flee,” the RVIPF stated.
Speaking on the success of the operation was Head of the Road Policing Unit Inspector Karen Vanterpool who said the public’s partnership greatly assisted the police in executing their duty.
“While noise complaints from the public are helpful, the active participation by members of the public is what led to the success of this operation. Similar operations will be carried out in the coming weeks,” she said.
Inspector Vanterpool also informed the owners of the scooters who intend on collecting their vehicles to walk with proof of ownership, licence and insurance.
This she said can be done at the Road Town Police Station on Fridays only between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
