Local sprinter Beyoncé Defreitas set a new national record in the Women’s 200-Meter event at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships which was held in Tampa, Florida over the weekend.
Running out of lane seven for the University of Central Florida, Defreitas missed out on a podium spot with a fourth-place finish, but her time of 22.81 seconds was quick enough to break the previous national record which was set by Tahesia Harrigan-Scott in 2007.
The race was won by her teammate Latasha Smith who clocked a time of 22.09 seconds.
Defreitas also assisted her team to a gold medal in the 4×100-meter relay running the third leg and she also placed fourth in the Women’s 100-meter race running 11.24 seconds, just one-one hundredth of a second off her personal best time.
