A press release today May 26th, 2023 from the BVI Airports Authority announced the closure of the T. B. Lettsome International Airport due ‘operational issue at the Control Tower’.
Investigations by our agency showed that the ‘operational issues’ at the towers are as a result of an alleged strike by workers at the BVI Airports Authority (BVIPA).
This was confirmed by senior personnel at the agency, who disclosed that workers are demanding overdue increments.
It is also stated that part of the grievances by workers is that they are overworked and under compensated.
This is not the first time the airport has had to close due to workers in this particular area of the BVI Airports Authority striking by way of a sick out.
The release further stated, ‘Persons traveling to and from the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport are encouraged to contact their respective airlines for alternate arrangements. The BVI Airports Authority apologizes for any inconvenience caused due to the closure of the airport and thanks the travelling public for its indulgence as it seeks to ensure that safety is maintained at all times.’
It is unclear how soon the matter would be address however the airports authority says ‘The Authority hopes to resume normal operations on Saturday, May 27, 2023 at 7:00 am.’
