The Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport has reopened to the travelling public following a brief closure earlier this morning.
The closure occurred after a cargo airline blew a tire upon landing at the airport.
“The BVI Airports Authority (BVIAA) wishes to advise the travelling public that the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport will resume normal operations at 1:20 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, following a brief closure,” the BVIAA stated.
Speaking on the incident, Managing Director of the BVIAA Mr. Kurt Menal said that “repair works have been completed on the cargo aircraft which was disabled on runway 25 earlier today.”
He further revealed that the aircraft taxied off of the runway under its own power to the apron for further inspection.
Menal assured the public that the runway was fully inspected by the Authority’s Operations Team to ensure all debris was removed prior to the reopening.

The Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport is temporarily closed to the travelling public after a cargo airline blew a tire upon landing at the airport.
This was confirmed by the BVI Airports Authority (BVIAA) in a media statement on Saturday, June 3, which said normal operations should resume at 1:00 p.m.
“The aircraft is currently disabled on runway 25. The Authority’s operations team along with an aircraft operator are currently arranging for the delivery of spare parts to allow the aircraft to be repaired and removed from the runway. The Authority hopes to resume normal operations around 1:00 p.m. today, Saturday, June 3, 2023. The public will be kept updated on the reopening efforts,” the BVIAA stated.
In light of this unexpected development, the BVIAA is encouraging persons who will be affected by the temporary closure to contact their respective airlines.
“As this closure will result in delays across the various airline networks, persons travelling today are encouraged to contact their respective airlines for further information regarding the respective travel arrangements. The BVI Airports Authority apologizes for any inconvenience caused due to the closure of the airport and thanks the travelling public for its indulgence as it seeks to ensure that safety is maintained at all times,” the BVIAA added.
