EDUCATION CURRICULUM NOT MEETING CURRENT LABOUR NEEDS – SAYS MINISTER

The existing education curriculum in the BVI which dates back to 2007 is not meeting the needs of the current labour market or the BVI’s economy.

Minister for Education Hon. Sharie De Castro made the comment during a recent interview as she highlighted the importance of the ongoing review of the territory’s education curriculum.

She said once the review has been completed, the aim is to have a curriculum that not only meets the standards of the present economy, but that is also applicable to the future advancements that will be made.

Also present to speak on the curriculum review was Associate Professor at Rutgers University Newark, Dr. Anica Bowe, who is in the territory to conduct an assessment on the BVI’s education curriculum.

She said despite the curriculum being outdated, teachers in the BVI have been able to make the best out of the little resources made available to them.

Dr. Bowe also provided a realistic timeline as to when the results from her assessment will be made available and the immediate steps which will follow.

She urged residents to be patient as a curriculum redesign can take a few years before being implemented in an effective manner.
