The Road Town Market Square Project is under scrutiny as concerns arise about the lack of activity and utilization of the newly renovated space.
During a recent appearance on the “Talking Points” talk show, Junior Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries, Dr the Honourable Karl Dawson, faced questions regarding the current state of the facility.
The hosts of the program expressed their disappointment in the fact that despite the significant investment in the project, the kiosks at the square remain unoccupied.
Dawson went on to reveal that, to his knowledge, all of the kiosks at the square are currently leased, although they may appear unused.
The revelation raised concerns about why individuals would hold onto the spaces without utilizing them and whether they are fulfilling their lease agreements by paying for the reserved spaces.
Dawson expressed that, at this time, it may not be appropriate to reclaim the kiosks from their leasers. This, as it noted the possibility that individuals may need some time to develop their ideas and get their businesses up and running.
In addition to the issue of unused kiosks, the topic of parking was also raised during the discussion. The hosts of the program highlighted the potential inconvenience for vendors if the location of Market Square is not easily accessible.
With the Emancipation Festival approaching, the hosts suggested the integration of the Market Square for vending during the peak of events, which could help attract more visitors and increase the utilisation of the space.
