A new electronic gating system and an upgraded CCTV system will be part of the significant security measures that will be implemented at the Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park following the submission of 22 recommendations from a recently conducted security audit.
This was confirmed in a government commissioned media release that said the development follows a meeting that was held on July 12, which included the Minister of Communications and Works Hon. Kye Rymer along with members of his ministry, and representatives from the British Virgin Islands Ports Authority (BVIPA) and the Tortola Pier Park Ltd (TPPL).
“The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the recommendations provided in the report and collaborate on effective strategies to enhance security measures,” the release stated.
According to Minister Rymer, Pier Park is already in the process of installing the systems.
He said the electronic gating system will enable the park to be adequately secured during closure periods while the CCTV system will seek to further enhance surveillance capabilities.
In addition, Rymer said there will be “increased security personnel within the park premises to enhance security presence and deter criminal activities.”
The security audit follows a recent daylight robbery of the House of Luxury Jewellery Store at the Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park.
35-year-old Shamul Mitchell and 27-year-old Jelani Marquis were jointly charged in relation to the robbery.
