MORTON SETS NEW NACAC AND BVI HIGH JUMP RECORD – BVI ENDS WITH 4 MEDALS

The trio of Jah’Kyla Morton, Beyonce Defreitas and Kimberly Smith delivered for the British Virgin Islands on the final day of the NACAC Under 18 and Under 23 Championships in San Jose, Costa Rica, after collecting gold, silver and bronze medals in their respective events.

Competing in the Under 18 Girls High Jump event, Morton collected the first gold medal of the championships for the BVI after leaping 1.74 meters.

The jump not only broke Morton’s previous national record of 1.70 meters, it also set a new NACAC Under 18 Girls High Jump Record.

Also delivering for the BVI for the second time in the championships was Beyonce Defreitas, who returned in the Girls’ 200-meter event after copping bronze in the 100-meter race.

Defreitas clocked a time of 23.59 seconds in the final to claim a silver medal for the territory. That race was won by American Mia Brahe-Pedersen, who completed the double, after previously winning the Girls’ 100-meter race in record time.

The BVI’s fourth medal was recorded in the Under 23 Girls Javelin by Kimberly Smith.

She collected a bronze after throwing 37.53 meters.

That event was won by Rhema Otabor of the Bahamas who threw 57.48 meters.
