VOTER REGISTRATION CONTINUES AMID REFERENDUM TALKS

The Office of the Supervisor of Elections is urging eligible people to register as voters as part of the office’s continuous voter registration process.

This, as a resolution for the territory’s first ever referendum, to decide on the same sex marriage, is well on its way to being debated in the House of Assembly.

A statement from the Office of the Supervisor of Elections described an eligible voter and a Belonger who is 18 years of age or older and domiciled in the Virgin Islands.

Interested individuals must present documents including a Virgin Islands Passport with an embossed seal or a Belonger’s Card or a Belonger’s Certificate. A Naturalisation Certificate can also be used, providing the certificate is dated before June 15, 2007.

People are also being urged to use this time to make requests for a change in electoral district following a change of residence from one electoral district or polling division to another. In this instance, proof of residence in their new location must be provided. Documents to support a transfer can be in the form of Cable, Water, Electricity or Telephone bills, a rent receipt, a lease agreement or a notarised document stating the new address.

Registration and Transfer forms are available at the Office of the Supervisor of Elections, Road Town Post Office, the District Offices on Anegada and Virgin Gorda and the Government Office on Jost Van Dyke. Additionally, these forms are accessible online at bvi.gov.vg/departments/office-supervisor-elections under the services tab.
