Leader of the Opposition, At Large Representative the Honourable Ronnie Skelton, has shared the view that while certain acts on schedule for the Emancipation Festival Village do have an audience in the Territory, they do not reflect the true nature of what the Emancipation Festival is known to represent.
He spoke at a recent sitting of the House of Assembly.
Noting the territory’s history with Slavery, Skelton stressed the importance of the traditions surrounding the observation of Emancipation Day in the British Virgin Islands.
The senior legislator asserted to members of the House of Assembly that as community leaders it is their responsibility to guide these annual observations.
He believes that while there is room for such acts within the entertainment space so that people can have fun, the Emancipation Festival ought to be an observation to celebrate a significant milestone.
