MARCUS SOLOMON APPOINTED DIRECTOR OF WASTE MANAGEMENT

In a recent Government Information Services release, it was announced that Mr. Marcus Solomon has been appointed to the post of Director of the Department of Waste Management.

Mr. Solomon’s appointment comes as the Ministry of Health and Social Development seeks to further enhance and develop the Territory’s waste management solutions and strategies.

Mr. Solomon brings to the Department an extensive background in public utility management. In 2016, he served as Senior Planning Specialist at the Trinidad and Tobago Ministry of Public Utilities where he performed an assessment of the Public Utilities Sector including water and wastewater, solid waste management, post and electricity.

Minister for Health and Social Development, Honourable Vincent Wheatley said Mr. Solomon comes to the ministry at a time when there are considerable challenges with the waste management system.

Honourable Wheatley said, “As we seek to reduce waste streams through recycling and other means, we have high expectations of him and we look forward to the impact he will be able to make towards the betterment of our Territory.”

As director, Mr. Solomon will be responsible for the day-to-day oversight of the Department of Waste Management. He will provide and guide the department’s vision and strategic actions in the quest to solve the waste management issues that are troubling the Territory.

Mr. Solomon’s appointment joins the Ministry of Health and Social Development as the Acting Governor, Mr. David Archer Jr. continues to champion Public Service Transformation, which envisions a public service that meets and exceeds the needs of the Territory.

“We are excited to have Mr. Solomon on board as the Territory’s new Director of Waste Management,” the Acting Governor expressed. He added, “His accomplished experience in developing policy and solutions to solve, advance and innovate the subject of waste management makes him a valuable resource to our territory. I am beyond confident that Mr. Solomon will lead the Department of Waste Management to new heights.”

Speaking on his appointment, the director said his love for the environment started after pursing his degree and studying subjects such as environmental and social economics which impacted his design to pursue a career in that sector.

“For the last seven years, my professional career has been in the environment sector contributing to the development of policy and strategies aimed at the positive transformation of waste management practices and expansion of the waste management industry.

Mr. Solomon said that he is excited to be in the Virgin Islands and more so, the Department of Waste Management, to work closely with all citizens and the government to make the department a global standard for the management of waste.

Mr. Solomon holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the University of the West Indies, as well as a Master of Business Administration from Heriot-Watt University. Additionally, he has earned a Post-Graduate Certificate in Project Planning, Appraisal and Management.
