FLASHFLOOD WARNING IN EFFECT FOR THE BVI

The Territory is under a flash flood watch until 12 noon today as Tropical Storm Franklin approaches from the south. The storm, which is being monitored by the National Hurricane Center for possible cyclone development, is expected to bring heavy rain and gusty winds to the islands.

According to the Department of Disaster Management, rainfall accumulation could total between 10 and 38 mm or .40 to 1.75 inch, which could cause flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Residents and visitors are advised to exercise caution and avoid driving or walking through flood waters.

A flash flood watch means that conditions are favourable for flooding, but it does not mean flooding will occur. However, it is possible that some areas may experience flash floods, which are sudden and dangerous floods that can occur within minutes of heavy rainfall.

The most recent weather forecast from the Department of Disaster Management was cloudy with occasional showers mixed with lighter rain. Some showers could be moderate to heavy, and there is a 60 per cent chance of thunderstorms.
