SAME-SEX MARRIAGE DEBATE FALLING VICTIM TO THE “CHRISTIAN TALIBAN” SAYS PRIEST

Father Sean Major Campbell, an Anglican Priest and Human Rights Advocate has weighed in on the ongoing debate of same-sex marriage in the British Virgin Islands and the wider Caribbean.

He spoke with Ronn Grant, in a recent 284 Media Special.

The Priest has called on the public to be aware of how the political players and legislators could fall prey to the tyranny of those he termed “the Christian Taliban”. He said that this group consists of fundamentalist Christians who use their religious influence to impose their moral values on others and to deny the rights and freedoms of those who do not conform to their narrow vision of society.

He also shared the perspective that the debate should not only focus on the legal and religious aspects of marriage but also on the broader topic of human sexuality.

Campbell said that human sexuality is a complex and diverse phenomenon that cannot be reduced to a binary or heteronormative framework. He said denying or suppressing these realities can lead to psychological and social harm.

Campbell also said that the advocacy of rights for the LGBTQ community is not a threat to the wider society or an imposition of a foreign agenda. He said that the fight for marriage equality is not an attempt to make others change their views or beliefs, but rather to ensure that all people are treated with dignity and respect, and have equal access to the benefits and responsibilities of marriage.
