BVIHSA warns of rising COVID-19 cases, urges vigilance

The British Virgin Islands Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) has noted a recent increase in the number of persons testing positive for COVID-19 at the Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital. The Organization believes that this increase in positive cases serves as a reminder that the Covid-19 virus persists, necessitating ongoing caution and proactive measures to ensure health and safety.

As the Omicron variant and other strains of the virus continue to circulate, the BVIHSA urges persons to remain vigilant and prioritize the health and well-being of both themselves and others. It is important that individuals follow recommended guidelines to reduce the risk of infection and subsequent transmission.

These guidelines include:

  • 1.     Maintaining Proper Hand Hygiene: Regularly wash hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitiser for at least 20 seconds
  • 2.     Wearing Masks indoors and in Crowded Places: Masks should be worn in indoor settings and crowded places, especially when physical distancing is not feasible. This step helps protect both individuals and the wider community.
  • 3.     Practicing Physical Distancing: Maintain a safe distance of 3 to 6 feet from others, particularly in crowded or enclosed spaces.
  • 4.     Monitoring Symptoms: Stay attuned to any symptoms of COVID-19, such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, headaches, dizziness or loss of taste or smell. If symptoms arise, individuals should seek testing and follow appropriate health guidance.
  • 5.     Following Official Health Guidelines: Keep up to date with the latest health advisories from reputable sources, such as the BVIHSA, the Ministry of Health & Social Development, and other relevant health authorities.

“The BVIHSA continues to monitor persons presenting with the virus and remains alert to protect the health and safety of the people of the Virgin Islands. Effective control of COVID-19 requires a collective effort, and the Authority appreciates the cooperation and support of every resident and visitor”, the organisation said in a recent statement.

Acting Chief Executive Officer – Dr. June Samuel expressed BVIHSA’s ongoing commitment to protecting the Community, she stated, “We must remain steadfast in our commitment to battling this virus and safeguarding the wellbeing of residents by adhering to recommended safety measures and staying informed. As it relates to the COVID-19 virus, we have already proven that we can overcome such challenges when we all work together.”

In line with this new development the Infection Prevention and Control Manager at the BVIHSA – Ms. Rosa Ravariere-Seaman, informed the public that with the increase in cases, the wearing of masks on hospital units is mandatory when visiting loved ones. She explained that; “this requirement helps to protect our patients, families, and healthcare workers.”  She emphasized that “masks must cover the nose and mouth at all times, as this is an essential step in preventing the spread of infections.”

The BVIHSA also advises persons who have been in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 to get tested as soon as possible and to self-isolate until they receive their results.

The BVIHSA’s warning comes amid a surge of COVID-19 cases in other Caribbean countries, such as Saint Lucia.

The BVIHSA will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as necessary. For more information on COVID-19, please visit www.bvihsa.vg or call the COVID-19 hotline at 852-7650.
