Significant strides are being made to revive the Pockwood Pond incinerator, which has been inactive since being gutted by fire in 2022.
That’s according to the Director of the Waste Management Department, Mr. Marcus Solomon who provided an update on ongoing efforts to restore the incinerator to operational status in a recent press release.
During a trip to Consutech Systems LLC in Richmond, Virginia, United States, earlier this month, Mr. Solomon and Waste Management Officer Mr. Neville Allen verified the status of outstanding contract agreements.
Mr. Solomon expressed optimism about the progress made during the trip, stating, that the visit allowed his team to address some lingering contract issues, “which puts us in a better place for a positive outcome to replace the spare parts necessary to have the incinerator functional by the end of the year”. He emphasised the importance of maintaining a positive working relationship with Consutech Systems LLC and hopes that the trip has strengthened the bond between both parties.
“We are hoping that this trip has reinforced the relationship between both parties and that we both can continue to benefit from a symbiotic relationship”, he said.
To ensure improved compliance with contractual arrangements, several measures have been put in place. These include shipping guidelines, new timelines, and a process that accounts for progress and potential delays. Penalties, including contract termination, have also been enforced to ensure adherence.
“The public is reminded to assist the department by diverting waste away from Pockwood Pond whenever possible. Residents are urged to rinse and segregate plastic, glass, and aluminium household waste and actively participate in the Territory’s “We Recycle” program”, the release advised.
