PREMIER HIGHLIGHTS POSITIVE SHIFT IN UK ENGAGEMENT AT UN ASSEMBLY

This week, Premier Dr. the Honourable Natalio Wheatley addressed the United Nations General Assembly’s Fourth Committee. At that time, he provided an update on recent developments in the relationship between the British Virgin Islands and the United Kingdom.

Wheatley said that the discussions that he and the Government of the Virgin Islands have had with Overseas Territories Minister Hon. David Rutley have been encouraging and constructive thus far. He also noted that in the months following their meeting in July, he has noticed a shift in the UK’s engagement and tone of communications with the Government.

He took this opportunity to reiterate his opposition on the UK’s Order in Council which continues to loom over the Territory.

Reflecting on the situation on the ground, and the progress made in the reform implementation process, Wheatley stressed that the government is working diligently to improve and strengthen the systems and institutions of government. He also thanked the UK for its technical assistance and stressed that this collaborative approach is the best way forward.

Looking ahead, Wheatley intends to further discuss the BVI’s relationship with the UK at the Joint Ministerial Council next month.
