On Wednesday, His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition held a press conference to express their concerns about various issues impacting residents, visitors, and the Territory as a whole.
The Honourable Ronnie Skelton, Leader of the Opposition, spearheaded the discussions that day, providing an overview of the most pressing matters.
Skelton’s opening statement quickly evolved into a call to action for the Government of the Virgin Islands. He urged the Government to secure the necessary funding to address these critical issues. The senior legislator emphasized that such matters require more than a “quick fix”.
Amidst a concerning crime situation in the Territory, Skelton revealed that the Opposition had met with Commissioner of Police Mark Collins to gain a better understanding of the current circumstances. Skelton commended the Commissioner’s “upfront and honest” response and reaffirmed the Opposition’s commitment to provide support where needed.
Reflecting on the current crime statistics, including the number of murders and attempted murders recorded this year, as well as the recent spate of burglaries in Tortola, Skelton expressed his belief in a strong correlation between crime and unemployment in the Virgin Islands.
