BVI’s Djimon Gumbs had a tough day at the office in the Men’s Discus Throw Final of the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, as he battled both the flu and his competitors to finish 9th.
Competing in cold weather conditions which at the time of his event was forecasted to be around 15 degrees Celcius with windspeeds of 15 kilometres per hour, Gumbs managed a best overall throw of 54.70 metres in his last of three attempts.
His first throw landed at a distance of 53.76 metres while his second was ruled as a foul.
The event was won by local Lucas Nervi of Chile, who had a best throw of 63.39 metres, while Alexander Ortega of Columbia and Jamaica’s Fredrick Dacres finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Djimon’s next event will be the Men’s Shot Put Final on Friday, November 3 at 3:30 p.m. BVI time. That event will also feature Olympian Eldred Henry of the BVI.
