DISTRICT COUNCILS PART OF NEW COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT POLICY FOR 2024 – $1 MILLION ALLOCATED

Premier Dr. the Honourable Natalio Wheatley has revealed his government’s intention to introduce a community development policy that will include the establishment of district councils across the nine electoral districts.

According to Premier Wheatley, there will be 11 district councils, with Anegada and Jost Van Dyke each having their own district councils.

Premier Wheatley who is also the finance minister listed some of the responsibilities of the district councils and some of the community projects that will be undertaken within districts come 2024.

Dr. Wheatley also revealed that $1 million has been allocated for all of the district councils for the development of community projects.

Premier Wheatley first made mention of the possibility of district councils at a press conference in July 2022.

At the time he said the district councils would offer better representation to residents in each of the districts.

The premier pointed to the Commission of Inquiry Report which recommended a similar entity as a solution to resolving some of the issues within the communities across the BVI.
