The Technical Studies Department at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) has acquired a Hyundai Grand i10 to enhance the experiential learning opportunities for students enrolled in its Automotive Engineering Technology Programme.
President of HLSCC, Dr. Richard Georges was pleased to transfer the vehicle from the College’s fleet to the Workforce Training Division on November 10, 2023, and pledged his support for practical learning.
Dean of Workforce Training, Ms. Marva Wheatley expressed that the Division is ecstatic to declare the introduction of this substantial element into its Automotive programme.
She explained that the vehicle has been intentionally chosen to meet the evolving requirements of the automotive industry and will strengthen the College’s commitment to providing industry-relevant and practical education.
Ms. Wheatley said, “Practical experience holds significant importance in guaranteeing that our students are sufficiently prepared for successful careers within the automotive industry. This vehicle would be an instructional tool that translates theory into practice by enabling students to apply their knowledge in a secure and supportive setting.”
She continued, “By providing access to this modern equipment and technology, students will enhance their practical experience and competency development.”
Recently appointed Head of Technical Studies, Ms. Cecelia Rowe shared that she is thrilled about the addition to her department.
Ms. Rowe said, “Our students are primarily visual and kinaesthetic learners, and this acquisition is viewed as an investment that exposes our trainees to cutting-edge technology that would significantly impact retention and employability.”
The Automotive Engineering Technology Associate of Science degree is a 2-2.5 years programme that is designed to provide knowledge and skills for anyone pursuing a career in the Automotive Service Industry.
It aims at developing technical skills in servicing, diagnosing and mechanical repairs. Content areas include knowledge of engines, electrics, electronics, chassis systems and engineering science.
