The Honourable Sharie de Castro, Minister for Education, Youth Affairs and Sports, recently addressed a fundamental aspect of societal advancement—equity and equality in education. She spoke in a statement on Special Education Week that was observed from November 27th to December 1st. She underscored the pivotal role that equal access to education plays in the progress of a society.
“A society’s progress is measured by its ability to provide equal access to education for all individuals,” declared Minister de Castro.
Minister de Castro pointed out that special education is not a peripheral issue; it affects every student within the education system. Recognizing the diverse needs of students, she advocated for an educational framework that caters to the unique abilities and challenges of each child.
She stressed that efforts to achieve equity in education in the British Virgin Islands are not just about ensuring that every child can attend school; it’s about guaranteeing that each student receives the quality education they need to thrive. It’s about recognizing potential and nurturing it, about understanding differences and accommodating them.
