The battle at the top of the BVI Football Association’s National League standings continued last weekend with Wolues FC benefiting the most from their 5-1 victory against Rebels FC which moved them from fourth to second place.
Playing at the Greenland football stadium on Sunday, the Wolues team which presently averages over five goals a game, maintained the average with their win against Rebels, as Hugo Costa Liziario scored his 7th and 8th goals of the campaign in the 47th and 90th minutes of play.
Marcus Robinson and Noel Maxwell were the other goal scorers in the 62nd and 81st minutes, and Wolues’ fifth goal was gifted via an own goal.
Meanwhile, over on Virgin Gorda, the rivalry match between the two sister island teams Sugar Boys and VG United lived up to expectations with an intense battle that resulted in a 1-1 draw.
The match portrayed the true meaning of physicality as the tempers of the players got out of control and resulted in a record total of 8 red cards and two yellow cards being issued.
Bernard Cumberbatch of VG United and Derol Redhead of Sugar Boys were the two goal scorers.
After the match, Captain Redhead said despite the sad ending to the match, it was one that was competitive and exciting.
“As tempers rose in a tense finish, both teams searching for the winner, and neither prepared to cede any ground. The heat of the moment got the better of the players and it was a shame for the fans that it ended that way,” he added.
Games continue this coming Sunday with Wolues FC taking on Old Madrid at 6:00 p.m. and VG United up against Positive FC at Greenland.
On Virgin Gorda, the lone game will see Positive FC versus One Love United at 6:00 p.m.
