Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. the Honourable Natalio Wheatley has labelled the 28th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change as the most successful to date for the territory.
This prognosis as put by Premier Wheatley is due to the success of the negotiations from the various meetings that were attended by officials representing the BVI.
The premier said the physical attendance of those meetings was imperative to the groundbreaking agreements made with the United Kingdom to include the BVI and the other Overseas Territories in the upcoming COP sessions.
Another development from COP 28 according to Premier Wheatley was the United Kingdom’s reception to ask of the Overseas Territories to provide a UK Climate Change Fund to assist the territories.
Premier Wheatley who is also the Minister responsible for Climate Change spoke to some of the other developments that will be rolled out soon to benefit the BVI.
Meanwhile, Ms. Angela Burnett-Penn, an Environmental Officer with a focus on climate change in the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change, spoke about the significance of COP 28 from the BVI perspective.
She also revealed that advocating for access to climate finance was one of the main priorities of the BVI and she explained the two levels of finance that the territory will be seeking.
