Opposition legislator Honourable Julian Fraser is requesting a referendum to be held in the British Virgin Islands to allow the people to decide on whether the governor should be granted additional power.
Fraser made the call during an Opposition press conference on Tuesday, January 9 as he proposed a special sitting of the House of Assembly to allow for the referendum and an official debate of all 13 elected members on the subject matter.
Fraser explained that allowing the people to decide via a referendum would fall in line with the democratic process of BVI’s political system, allowing the voting public to have a say on the historic decision.
The Third District Representative also accused His Excellency Governor John Rankin of doubling down on the colonization of the territory with his request which he believes could set the territory’s political advancement back decades if the additional powers are granted.
