His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition has declared its unwavering support for the government’s stance against Governor John Rankin’s request for increased authority to implement reforms stemming from the Commission of Inquiry (COI) recommendations.
During a press conference on Tuesday, January 9th, Opposition Leader Ronnie Skelton expressed deep concern regarding the Governor’s intentions. He emphasized the Opposition’s desire to collaborate closely with the government to thwart the Governor’s power grab.
Skelton firmly believes granting the Governor more power would be a detrimental step backwards for both governance and democracy in the VI. He believes that there is still room for more thought towards how things are intended to unfold.
Drawing upon his extensive experience, Skelton said that historical evidence points towards advancements in the VI whenever the elected representatives wield greater power.
