On Sunday February 4th at the highly anticipated 66th Grammy Awards. Two Virgin Islanders took home Grammy Awards. They are US Virgin Islander Theron Thomas and BV Islander Donelle Smith. Theron Thomas, won 2024 Songwriter of the Year (Non-Classical). Theron has several massive hits under his belt this year, including “Pretty Girls Walk”, the viral track performed by Big Boss Vette, “Told Ya”, with Chlöe & Missy Elliot, and Tyla’s “Been Thinking” among others.
In a previous interview with 284 media, Theron expressed gratitude for being nominated for the Grammy Awards.
Department of Tourism Commissioner Joseph Boschulte lauded Mr Thomas for his enduring discipline that has led to such a pinnacle recognition. Boschulte said, “It is with great pride that we congratulate our very own Theron Thomas. From an island paradise of just 32 square miles, he has gone on to receive the highest accolade in your field, adding to your ongoing amplification of Virgin Islands excellence. Naturally in Rhythm is not just a tagline, it’s our people and we thank you for sharing it with the world,” he said in a statement provided to the Consortium.
Governor Albert A. Bryan Jr, also praised the recording artist and songwriter, expressing immense pride in the accomplishment. “On behalf of the entire US Virgin Islands I want to congratulate Theron Thomas on today’s historic Grammy win. I stand with the entire territory in expressing immense joy as a native son takes center stage on the music industry’s biggest stage.”
BV Islander Donelle Smith, an engineer and producer also won a Grammy award for his work in Barbie and shared his victory with the world.
“AND THE GRAMMY GOES TO‼️‼️‼️ Lord knows I could say many things, this journey has not been an easy one for those who know know. From sleepin on couches, sleepin in my car and sleepin in studios etc. To believe that I am now a Grammy Award Winning Engineer from the BVI & Grenada is SURREAL. I’m very emotional writing this….but I just wanna say where man doubts God sees potential, and saw potential I didn’t even know I myself had. This is a testament to everyone out there chasin their dreams don’t give up. I nearly quit years ago but I kept pushing and here we are. God is and will always be the greatest.
He added, “Smith said in a FB Post. “Grammy History was made today. Theron Thomas brought home the Grammy for Best Songwriter and I brought home the Grammy for Best Soundtrack Compilation wit Barbie. USVI & BVI history.”
Prior to the Grammy’s Smith had prophesied that he would win. Saying in a post, “Grammys in 2 days I’m bringing home that WIN for Barbie The Album in Jesus name‼️”
