BVIslander Djimon Gumbs has earned a Southland Conference (SLC) weekly award for his superb performance in the shot put event last weekend.
Gumbs who is a Northwestern State senior, unleashed a season-best throw of 17.89 meters to claim victory at the Bruce Lehane Scarlet and White Invitational in Boston. This achievement not only marks the best in the conference for the current season but also stands as the seventh-best in the highly competitive South Central region.
Upon receiving the accolade, Gumbs in an exclusive interview with 284 Media expressed his deep honour, emphasizing the significance of being recognized for his exceptional prowess in the field.
Gumbs’ triumphant display at the Bruce Lehane Scarlet and White Invitational followed a strong second-place finish in a shot put event at Harvard the day prior, where he recorded an impressive distance of 17.57 meters.
He reflected on his recent achievements and the challenges he faced due to a brief illness that has so far impacted his season.
As he continues to overcome obstacles and elevate his performance, Gumbs revealed that his primary goal is to progressively enhance his throws in the upcoming meets.
With an eye on the prize, he aims to meet the qualifying standard for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
