16 teams will be contesting in this year’s Virgin Islands Volleyball Association (VIVA) Power League.
Of the sum, six will contest in the Men’s Division, four in the Women’s A Division and six in the Women’s B Division.
Speaking at the league’s opening ceremony on Saturday, President of the Virgin Islands Volleyball Association Willis Potter said he was impressed with the resurgence in the Men’s Division which continues to rebound following a decline in the number over the years.
President Potter also highlighted the overall increase of teams in the women’s divisions but noted that work is still needed to increase the numbers in A Division.
Potter also spoke about the importance of documenting statistical information during the games which he said will assist with the development of players.
Meanwhile, Minister for Education and Sports, Honourable Sharie De Castro, said she was pleased to see the large turnout of females in the discipline.
De Castro said her ministry has been partnering with the relevant stakeholders to contribute to the development of volleyball in the BVI, starting at the grassroots level.
Games are played weekly on Saturdays and Sundays in the three divisions.
