With over 40 percent of the BVI population ages 25 to 64 considered obese, the Ministry of Health is calling for immediate attention and collective action to address the growing issue.
The call came from the Minister of Health and Social Development, Honourable Vincent Wheatley, during World Obesity Day on Monday, March 4 which was celebrated under the theme “Let’s Talk About Obesity &”.
Wheatley noted that the alarming statistics on obesity in the BVI stem from a previously conducted STEPS survey.
Even more alarming is the revelation that obesity exists at the primary school level, with Minister Wheatley confirming that approximately 43 percent of students at that level are considered obese.
As to the root of the issue, Wheatley said it stems from the BVI’s tradition which is rich in several of the risk factors that contribute to the high rate of obesity.
To address the issue, Minister Wheatley said it will take a multifaceted approach that will involve all stakeholders.
He said his ministry is actively working on several key initiatives, including Food Based Dietary Guidelines and an Eat Well Guide for the territory.
