SISTER ISLANDS PROGRAMME SEEKS CERT VOLUNTEERS FOR DISASTER RESPONSE

The Sister Islands Programme Unit is actively recruiting Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) volunteers from Anegada, Virgin Gorda, and Jost Van Dyke, aiming to bolster disaster preparedness and response efforts across the British Virgin Islands.

Mrs. Monel Nickie, Coordinator of the Sister Islands Programme, emphasized the crucial role of CERT volunteers in addressing community needs in the aftermath of disasters or when emergency services face challenges in reaching affected areas. These volunteers play a vital role in saving lives and protecting property, providing immediate assistance to their communities in times of crisis.

Residents of the sister islands who are interested in volunteering for CERT are encouraged to reach out to their local district office for more information and registration. Nickie stressed the importance of engaging key stakeholders, government entities, and the general public in a holistic approach to disaster preparedness and response.

“To ensure that sister island communities are adequately prepared to respond to disaster situations, there must be a holistic approach that engages key emergency stakeholders, Government entities, as well as the general public. The re-establishment of CERT allows residents to become directly involved in saving lives and assisting those in need,” Mrs. Nickie stated.

Interested individuals can register through their local district office by contacting the following telephone numbers:

  • Anegada District Office: (284) 368-9712
  • Virgin Gorda District Office: (284) 468-9542
  • Jost Van Dyke District Office: (284) 468-9013

The Sister Islands Programme Unit serves as the liaison for the Department of Disaster Management on the Sister Islands, facilitating timely and adequate assistance within communities before, during, and after disaster situations. District officers play a critical role in overall planning, coordination of resources, and overseeing emergency communications to ensure effective disaster preparedness and response efforts.

By joining the CERT program, residents have the opportunity to contribute directly to strengthening disaster resilience in their communities and safeguarding the well-being of their fellow citizens.
