The Virgin Islands Softball Baseball Association (VISBA) made history on Saturday, April 6, as they unveiled the newly christened 2024 Raymond “Mahassa” Mercer & Kathleen Fahie National Fast Pitch League, paying homage to two icons who have left an indelible mark on the sport of softball in the territory.
The opening ceremony for the league’s new season saw a vibrant display of solidarity and celebration, with 13 teams from across the men’s and women’s divisions converging at the E. Walwyn Brewley Ball Park for the occasion. The atmosphere crackled with excitement as teams paraded onto the field, their spirits high and ambitions set for the challenges ahead.
Public Relations Officer Shamora “Molly” Penn-Maduro took to the stage to recount some of Kathleen Fahie’s remarkable achievements throughout her illustrious softball career.
Fahie, a revered figure in the softball community, was visibly moved by the gesture, expressing her heartfelt gratitude to the association for bestowing this honour upon her. In a display of her trademark eloquence, Fahie delivered a stirring speech, resonating with all in attendance and underscoring the profound impact that softball has had on her life.
President of VISBA, Rhodni Skelton, then took the opportunity to shed light on Raymond “Mahassa” Mercer’s significant contributions to the sport.
Mercer’s dedication and passion for softball have been instrumental in shaping its trajectory in the territory, earning him the admiration and respect of players and fans alike.
In a gracious display of humility, Mercer graciously accepted the honour, urging the assembled teams to embrace the values of hard work and dedication, emphasizing the importance of relentless practice in perfecting their craft.
Among the distinguished guests at the ceremony was Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. the Honourable Natalio Wheatley, who spoke fondly of the impact that Fahie and Mercer have had on softball, reflecting on his own experiences as an avid fan who has witnessed their greatness first-hand.
Minister for Sports, Honourable Sharie De Castro, echoed similar sentiments, expressing gratitude to Mercer and Fahie for their invaluable contributions to the sport. She emphasized the enduring legacy that their achievements will leave behind, inspiring generations of young athletes to strive for excellence and pursue their dreams with unwavering determination.
