The British Virgin Islands will commemorate a historic milestone this year with the 70th anniversary of the Virgin Islands Emancipation Festival.
To mark the occasion of the 70th Emancipation Festival, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has announced plans to launch a special limited-edition commemorative license plate.
Minister for Communications and Works, Hon. Kye M. Rymer, shared details about the commemorative plates, designed to symbolize the spirit of freedom and pay homage to the Territory’s remarkable journey.
“This momentous occasion not only marks a significant milestone in our history, but serves as a reminder of the strength and resilience of the people of the Territory,” Hon. Rymer stated.
Acting DMV Commissioner Gregory Skelton emphasized the importance of creating a lasting memento for the 70th Emancipation Celebration. “Our team is proud to contribute with a Commemorative License Plate, designed to be cherished for years to come,” he said.
The public will have a chance to participate through a Design Competition running until June 7th. Skelton invited residents to submit their design ideas by email to infodmv@gov.vg or directly to the DMV office. All entries must include the inscription “Virgin Islands” at the top and “Nature’s Little Secret” at the bottom.
Permanent Secretary Elvia Smith-Maduro praised the timely initiative, noting it will help ensure future generations continue to honor the Territory’s history and traditions while fostering unity.
“Together, we can keep the spirit of emancipation alive as we ‘Celebrate our Freedom, Live in Unity’ as BVI Festival turns 70,” Smith-Maduro added.
The commemorative plates aim to be a source of Virgin Islands pride while celebrating the 70th anniversary of Emancipation. More details on purchasing the plates will be announced soon by the DMV.
