SEAGRAPE TREES REPLANTED TO RESTORE LONG BAY BEACH

In an effort to restore the natural environment and protect the shoreline, the Government of the Virgin Islands and Unite BVI Foundation are replanting 100 seagrape trees along Long Bay Beach on Beef Island Today, June 8th, 2024.

The “Seagrape Tree Replanting” event is part of Operation Restoration, an initiative aimed at reviving coastal areas impacted by erosion and human activity. The first 20 of the seagrape trees were ceremonially planted and will be named after significant community members from the 7th and 8th districts to honor their contributions.

Premier and Minister of Environment Dr. Natalio D. Wheatley kicked off  the planting portion of the event. Grade 5 students and parents from Willard Wheatley and Francis Lettsome Primary Schools joined the tree planting efforts with support from the Rotaract Club of Tortola.

Volunteers were invited to assist with the removal of invasive species along the beach area during the event.

More details on how the activity unfolded will be provided in subsequent reporting.
