In the aftermath of Tropical Storm Ernesto, Premier of the Virgin Islands, Dr. the Honourable Natalio Wheatley, addressed the territory, offering reassurance and urging caution as recovery efforts begin.
Premier Wheatley began, expressing relief that residents had made it safely through the worst of the storm. He acknowledged the challenges left in Ernesto’s wake, including downed trees, power lines, and scattered debris that have disrupted daily life and obstructed roadways across the BVI.
Premier Wheatley provided an update on the ongoing recovery efforts, noting that crews from the Public Works Department, the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC), and telecommunication providers were actively working to clear the roads and restore essential services.
He also extended his gratitude to the district representatives and heavy equipment operators who are lending their support to their communities during this critical time.
“I urge residents to remain safe at home until the all-clear is issued,” the Premier emphasized, stressing the importance of allowing emergency crews the time and space needed to carry out their work safely and effectively. He called on everyone to prioritize their own safety as well as that of the essential workers on the front lines of the recovery effort.
Concluding his address, Premier Wheatley expressed gratitude for the protection the territory has received, stating, “We are grateful to God for his protection. May his love and mercy be our shelter throughout the remainder of this hurricane season.”
