Government officials are defending the pace of reforms following another missed deadline, emphasizing the importance of democratic processes over rigid timelines.
Deputy Premier Hon. Lorna Smith stressed that democracy should not be rushed while acknowledging significant progress in the reform process.
Smith acknowledged challenges related to stringent deadlines, suggesting that the approach to the timeline may not have been optimal.
Premier Dr. the Hon. Natalio Wheatley echoed Smith’s sentiments, reflecting on how the deadlines in the reform framework were established. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the Virgin Islands’ democratic integrity throughout the process.
Looking ahead, Smith expressed confidence that the BVI is positioned to become a leader in good governance among overseas territories. She indicated that this vision has already been communicated to UK officials in preparation for the Joint Ministerial Council meetings scheduled for November.
Premier Wheatley touted the ability to maintain balance between the democratic process and the ambitious pursuit of the reform deadlines. He believes that all parties involved should be commended for their efforts.
