BOARD REQUIREMENTS COULD DETER QUALIFIED CANDIDATES; SAYS WALWYN

Hon. Myron Walwyn, Representative for the Sixth District, has voiced concerns over certain aspects of new legislation to guide statutory boards, despite welcoming efforts to standardize mechanisms.

During a recent session of the House of Assembly, Walwyn scrutinized several sections of the National Parks Trust (Amendment) bill, including those concerning board member qualifications and requirements, which has been standardized across the slew of new legislation.

While acknowledging the importance of competent board members, Walwyn cautioned that some qualification requirements might deter potentially suitable candidates.  He cautioned against this considering the already small pool of individuals to pull from

He also criticized what he deemed as overly intrusive measures, such as requiring board members to publicly declare their belongings. He argued this could further discourage potential candidates from serving.

Walwyn emphasized that board members primarily engage in community service, noting that the provided stipend hardly serves as an incentive. He stressed caution while finalizing this new legislation, noting the unfortunate situation currently facing some boards in the territory.
