Kickin It University (KIU) recently announced that it is opening its doors for a highly anticipated first semester, starting on Saturday, November 23, 2024, with an engaging session led by the BVI Heritage Dancers. This dynamic class is just the beginning of the cultural exploration and creative learning the program has in store. Persons interested in participating can register and learn more at kickinituniversity.com.
Upcoming classes will feature community members like Ms. Jennifer Bertie of “Jenny’s Kitchen”, who will host a virtual cooking session teaching students how to make her famous Johnny Cakes, a cherished Virgin Islands delicacy.
In addition to live and in-person sessions, KIU offers theory courses. “National Heroes” and “Sweet Fungi Music” are theory courses that are already available. Both meticulously researched and curated by the Kickin It team. These classes will allow students to dive deep into Virgin Islands history and culture at their own pace.
Kickin It University is an innovative educational initiative dedicated to exploring Virgin Islands culture and creativity through virtual and in-person classes. With over 200 students already registered, the program is off to a strong start, thanks to the incredible support from the Virgin Islands community and generous donors.
KIU’s development received a significant boost from Unite BVI, whose additional $5,000 donation ensures that the courses remain free or affordable for all community members that participate. This funding compliments the success of the crowdfunding campaign held in May 2024, that totalled more than $10,000 pledged.
KIU is committed to providing lasting resources for its learners. All course materials are accessible through an online student portal that is available even after the program concludes, enabling lifelong learning. The virtual format also enhances accessibility, allowing the Virgin Islands diaspora worldwide to participate. Images
In an official comment, KIU said, “We welcome passionate individuals interested in supporting the program. Whether by donating resources or volunteering as instructors, there are many ways to contribute to this exciting initiative.
