His Majesty’s Virgin Islands Prison Service (HMVIPS) has received a significant boost through a UK-funded support package aimed at improving security, safety, and staff protection at HMP Balsam Ghut.
The initiative, which includes advanced tools, state-of-the-art radios, and enhanced identification systems, marks a transformative step in modernizing the Territory’s prison operations.
Mr. Lee Pilkington, Head of the National Locking Section for the UK Ministry of Justice (MoJ) Property Directorate, visited HMP Balsam Ghut this week, delivering specialized tools and sharing expertise from the UK prison estate. The visit introduced advanced security protocols to ensure the safety of staff, inmates, and the community.
Additionally, prison officers were equipped with upgraded radios and ID cards funded by the UK Government. The radios have already demonstrated their effectiveness in preventing security breaches, such as the interception of contraband items. In one instance, a package containing prohibited items was detected and promptly addressed through coordinated efforts facilitated by the new communication system.
Governor of the Virgin Islands, Mr. Daniel Pruce, emphasized the broader significance of these upgrades, stating:
“Security provides a strong foundation for growth and prosperity. By enhancing security at HMP Balsam Ghut and investing in protecting and equipping prison officers, we enable the prison service to transform lives and reduce the risk of reoffending, improving the overall security of the Virgin Islands and safety in our community.”
In a further milestone for HMVIPS, the service hosted its inaugural Staff Awards event on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at Government House. The ceremony recognized outstanding contributions from prison staff, fostering a culture of excellence and inclusivity.
The event’s highlight was the presentation of the Prison Officer of the Year 2024 award to Officer Rodriguez, whose exceptional service exemplifies the dedication and professionalism of HMVIPS staff.
Superintendent of HMP Balsam Ghut, Mr. Jay Kendall, expressed gratitude for the UK Ministry of Justice’s support, saying:
“Fostering a culture of excellence at HMP Balsam Ghut is essential to safeguarding the Virgin Islands. I extend my gratitude to our UK Ministry of Justice partners for their invaluable investment in our prison service and its future.”
This UK partnership represents a significant step in advancing prison service operations in the Virgin Islands. By integrating modern security measures and recognizing the contributions of dedicated staff, HMVIPS continues to enhance safety and rehabilitation, ultimately contributing to a safer and more prosperous community.
