Premier Dr. the Hon. Natalio Wheatley has been elected as the President of the UK Overseas Territories Association (UKOTA) and will concurrently serve as President of its Political Council.
This appointment announced by the Government of the Virgin Islands on Thursday, January 9, highlights the BVI’s leadership in fostering unity and collaboration among the UK Overseas Territories (UKOTs).
Joining Premier Wheatley in a pivotal leadership role is Ms. Tracy Bradshaw, UK Representative and Director of the BVI London Office, who has been elected as the Chair of UKOTA. The government noted that the appointments mark a transformative moment for the organization as it prepares to build on the momentum from its 30th anniversary celebrations and address critical global challenges.
Premier Wheatley emphasized the importance of collective action in his new role.
“This is not just about leadership; it’s about unity and collaboration. Together, we will harness our collective strengths to address the challenges we face, such as climate change and economic resilience, and to seize the opportunities that lie ahead for our territories. Our voices will be heard, and our aspirations will be realized,” he stated.
Ms. Bradshaw echoed these sentiments, pledging unwavering commitment to the UKOTs.
“Alongside Premier Wheatley and our dedicated team, we will work tirelessly to ensure that the concerns and aspirations of the UK Overseas Territories are acknowledged and addressed with the utmost diligence and respect,” she said.
Strengthening Collective Representation
UKOTA, which represents the governments of the UK Overseas Territories in the United Kingdom, plays a crucial role in advancing dialogue, promoting collaboration, and ensuring equitable representation for all member territories. Under Premier Wheatley’s leadership, the organization is expected to prioritize the needs of smaller territories while addressing shared issues such as climate change, economic resilience, and global engagement.
The British Virgin Islands last held these posts in 2016 under the presidency of former Premier Dr. Orlando Smith, with Benito Wheatley serving as Chair.
