The BVI Cancer Society is alerting the public to a scam targeting community members via WhatsApp.
Reports indicate that scammers are impersonating the organization, falsely inviting individuals to Zoom calls and making fraudulent claims about fundraising events, including their popular Bingo events.
In a statement, the BVI Cancer Society emphasized that these activities are unauthorized and urged vigilance to prevent further exploitation.
“We are deeply troubled that scammers are exploiting our name and reputation in this way,” the society said. “Our focus remains on supporting the community through cancer awareness, prevention, and care, and we ask for your assistance in stopping this fraudulent activity.”
The Cancer Society clarified its communication practices, noting that t e organization does not use WhatsApp to send invitations to Zoom meetings or to promote events. It said updates about activities and fundraising events are shared through the society’s verified channels, including its website, Facebook page, and trusted community partners.
The BVI Cancer Society also noted that it does not request personal information or financial contributions via WhatsApp or unverified platforms.
It advised the public to take the following precautions if they encounter suspicious messages: Avoid clicking on links or sharing personal information; Contact the BVI Cancer Society directly to confirm the validity of the message; and notify the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) at 311 and provide details about the fraudulent communication.
The society thanked the community for its continued support and encouraged vigilance to safeguard against scams.
