BVI WISHES U.S. WELL DESPITE RESERVATIONS ABOUT TRUMP

Premier Dr. the Hon. Natalio Wheatley has voiced optimism that the newly sworn-in United States President Donald Trump will be able to bolster the United States’ economic strength, a critical factor for the Virgin Islands’ own prosperity.

At a press conference on Thursday, Premier Wheatley acknowledged the BVI’s substantial economic reliance on the United States, noting that many tourists and financial services clients come from the American market.

He stressed that the territory’s primary concern is ensuring the US economy remains robust during the Trump Administration.

The premier said the BVI government will be closely monitoring the new administration’s policies, particularly surrounding issues like the global minimum tax. He expressed hope that President Trump will be able to implement measures to bolster U.S. financial markets.

However, Dr. Wheatley made clear that he does not personally view Trump as a role model. The premier emphasized that the VI’s focus is on wishing the best for the American people and ensuring economic stability, regardless of who occupies the White House.

With strong ties to its American neighbour, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and many residents having family in the U.S., Premier Wheatley stated the territory has a vested interest in the strength of the broader American economy and society.
