A 28-year-old man from St. Thomas, USVI, has been charged with Unlawful Possession of Explosives following an incident on the western end of Tortola during the early hours of Wednesday, January 15.
The suspect, identified as Shamauri Camsel, was apprehended after officers of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) intercepted a suspicious vehicle linked to multiple reports of gunshots in the area.
According to Acting Commissioner of Police Jacqueline Vanterpool, officers responded promptly to the reports and attempted to stop a vehicle that attempted to evade capture. However, their efforts were unsuccessful, and a search of the vehicle uncovered a package containing 200 rounds of 9mm ammunition.
Camsel was taken into custody and later charged with the offence. He was remanded to His Majesty’s Prison following his initial court appearance.
The RVIPF has emphasized its commitment to safeguarding public safety and maintaining vigilance against activities that threaten the security of the Virgin Islands.
“The safety of our residents and visitors remains our top priority, and we will continue to take strong action against anyone engaged in activities that pose a risk to the community,” said Acting Commissioner Vanterpool during the press conference.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and the RVIPF is urging anyone with information or knowledge of suspicious activities to come forward.
