Second District Representative Hon. Melvin M. Turnbull has expressed frustration over the prolonged delay the Brewers Bay Restrooms and Waste Water Management Facility, a project that began in 2021 and remains incomplete in 2025.
The facility’s opening now hinges on the arrival of an electrical component for the sewerage treatment system, according to Turnbull, who said he was asked by the Deputy Premier not to raise questions about the project in the House of Assembly.
He spoke in an invited comment to 284 Media.
“It is since 2021 this bathroom started and it is now 2025. We need this bathroom opened,” Turnbull said, calling the ongoing project “a teething pain”.
The legislator highlighted the project’s significance for the area’s tourism sector, noting several tourism properties in the vicinity that would benefit from the public facility.
“We need to ensure that the people of Brewers Bay and surrounding communities as well as visitors are able to access that bathroom,” Turnbull said.
The four-year delay of what appears to be a straightforward public works project was a point of contention during the 2023 General Election, as it raised questions about project management and accountability in the territory’s infrastructure development.
The facility as of last week was locked, and access hindered by severely overgrown bush. Stay tuned for another update on this matter as 284 Media makes another visit to the facility this week.
