FRETT QUALIFIES FOR 2025 CARIFTA GAMES – LIBURD SETS NEW SCHOOL RECORD

Rising BVI sprinter Tiondre Frett has secured his spot for the 2025 CARIFTA Games in Trinidad and Tobago, achieving double qualification marks in both the 200 and 400 metres. Frett’s impressive performances came at the John Thomas Terrier Classic in Boston on Saturday, where he competed for Sprint Tech BVI.

In the Men’s Open 400 Metres, Frett finished second in Heat 17, clocking a time of 50.26 seconds, which placed him 29th overall. He later returned for the Men’s Open 200 Metres, where he dominated Heat 19, crossing the line in 22.08 seconds and securing a 14th-place overall finish.

Frett, a 2024 CARIFTA Games bronze medallist in the Under-17 Boys’ 200 Metres, now joins Savianna Joseph, Othniel Gillings, and Kijana Callwood, who also met qualification standards last week.

Kaelyaah Liburd’s Record-Breaking Weekend

At the collegiate level, Kaelyaah Liburd continued her outstanding season with a record-breaking performance at the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational. Representing Florida State University (FSU), Liburd set a new personal best and a school record, running 53.24 seconds to secure first place in the women’s 400 metres.

Her stellar run also etched her name into FSU history, ranking sixth among the university’s top-10 all-time 400-metre performances. Liburd further contributed to her school’s success by helping FSU’s distance medley relay team set a new Florida State and school record.

Other BVI athletes also impressed in their respective events over the weekend:

  • Wanyae Belle (Barton County Community College) won Heat 5 of the men’s 200 metres at the Stan Scott Invite & Multis, clocking an impressive 21.29 seconds.
  • Joshua Hill (University of Texas at El Paso) finished second in the New Mexico Team Open men’s 400 metres with a strong time of 47.84 seconds.
  • Khybah Dawson (Texas A&M University) placed third in the long jump at the New Mexico Team Open, recording a leap of 7.69 metres.
  • J’Nya Demming (Highland College) opened her season with a 25.97-second finish in the 200 metres and helped her 4×400 metres team, running a 57.75-second split. Her impressive performances earned her the Scottie of the Week title.
