BVI CANCER SOCIETY COVERS CO-PAY FOR CANCER PATIENTS

Cancer patients at Penn Medical Centre’s Oncology Department received an unexpected gift of support as the BVI Cancer Society stepped in to cover their co-pay expenses on February 4 and 5.

The initiative, organized in observance of World Cancer Day, aimed to ease the financial strain many patients face while undergoing treatment.

A Gesture of Support and Compassion

World Cancer Day, observed annually on February 4, serves as a global reminder of the fight against cancer and the importance of collective action. This year, instead of simply raising awareness, the BVI Cancer Society took tangible steps to assist those directly affected by the disease.

“Cancer doesn’t just take a toll on your health—it can be a huge financial strain too. We wanted to give patients one less thing to worry about, even if just for a day. Sometimes, it’s these small, unexpected gestures that make the biggest difference,” said Gloria Fahie, President of the BVI Cancer Society.

Patients at the medical centre were surprised and deeply moved by the initiative. For many, the financial assistance meant they could focus on their treatment and recovery without the immediate worry of out-of-pocket costs. Others expressed gratitude, saying the relief gave them the flexibility to schedule follow-up care and additional therapies they might have otherwise postponed.

More Than Just Financial Help

Beyond the financial impact, the initiative was a symbol of solidarity with cancer patients, reinforcing the message that they are supported and valued within the community.

“It’s not just about the money! It’s about showing our cancer community that we’re here for them in ways they might not expect,” Ms. Fahie added.

The BVI Cancer Society remains dedicated to advocacy, education, and direct assistance, ensuring that those affected by cancer receive both emotional and financial support. Through initiatives like this, the Society continues to make a real difference in the lives of cancer patients—one act of kindness at a time.
