Joe Chapman and Zoe Sorrentino emerged victorious as the men’s and women’s national squash champions following dominant performances in the National Squash Championships held at the Tortola Sports Club last Friday.
In the men’s final, top-ranked Joe Chapman faced off against reigning Under-17 Caribbean Junior Squash Champion Danny Henderson, securing an emphatic 11-5, 11-1, 11-2 victory.
Chapman was in top form from start to finish, executing a clear game plan that saw him dominate the match by attacking Henderson’s backhand side. His precision and tactical approach prevented Henderson from finding any rhythm, leading to a commanding performance and another national title to his already extensive collection.
Following his win, Chapman expressed his satisfaction with his performance and the competitive level of the tournament.
“It’s been great to compete at this level and to see the progression of the younger players. It’s always an honour to win the national title, and it’s great for the club as well,” Chapman said.
Donaldson and Noblett-Diaz Shine in Other Men’s Matches
In the third-place match, Garreth Donaldson secured a hard-fought victory over Dion Anselm in four games (11-9, 6-11, 11-9, 11-7).
Meanwhile, reigning Under-13 Caribbean Junior Squash Champion Jakob Noblett-Diaz claimed the Men’s Plate title, overcoming Chris Pease 11-9, 11-9, 5-11, 11-8 in a tightly contested battle.
Sorrentino Dominates Women’s Final
In the women’s division, BVI’s top-ranked female player Zoe Sorrentino put on a stellar performance, defeating Laure-Astrid Wigglesworth 11-1, 11-5, 11-1 to claim another national title.
Speaking after her win, Sorrentino expressed her excitement about her performance and the growth of women’s squash in the BVI.
“It feels really good to win again, but what’s even better is seeing the progress of the younger players. The sport is growing, and it’s great to see,” she said.
Pease and Anderson Secure Women’s Third-Place and Plate Titles
In the third-place match, reigning Under-11 Caribbean Junior Squash Champion Delilah Pease continued to impress, defeating Mandi Atack 11-9, 11-5, 11-4.
The Women’s Plate final saw Erin Anderson edge past Erika Sorrentino in three close games 11-7, 11-8, 11-9.
Coach Murrills Praises Tournament’s Success
National Head Coach and Tournament Organizer Adam Murrills commended all the players for their dedication and high-level performances throughout the competition.
“It’s great to see Joe continue to dominate, but also exciting to watch the younger players stepping up and competing at such a high level. The depth of talent in the BVI squash scene is growing, and that’s a positive sign for the future,” Murrills stated.
With the National Squash Championships concluded the BVI squash community now looks ahead to future competitions, building on the success and momentum of this year’s event.
