The Ministry of Health and Social Development is urging residents to prioritize sexual health as cases of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) increase in the British Virgin Islands.
While specific figures were not disclosed, health officials emphasized the importance of prevention, education, and testing, particularly with Valentine’s Day approaching.
“Wrap It Up” Campaign for Valentine’s Week
Public Health Officer Ms. Renee Leonard stated that the ministry is using this period to raise awareness and encourage safe practices. She noted that Valentine’s Day, often celebrated as the “day of love,” presents an ideal opportunity to reinforce the “Wrap It Up” message.
“The week-long initiative is designed to share information, heighten STI awareness, promote testing, and encourage safe sexual practices,” Ms. Leonard explained.
As part of the campaign, the Ministry of Health has partnered with Eureka Medical and Sapphire Health to offer special Valentine’s Day testing deals, making it easier for residents to check their sexual health status.
Encouraging Responsible Choices
Ms. Leonard urged individuals to take ownership of their sexual health by being informed and making responsible choices.
“We encourage everyone to pay attention to the information, heed the advice, and take proactive steps,” she said. “Be faithful to one committed partner, use barrier contraceptives, and get tested. Enjoy your day of love responsibly.”
The ministry’s awareness campaign includes brochures, flyers, radio advertisements, and a GIS radio report scheduled to air this week. Additionally, the February edition of the Ministry of Health’s newsletter will be made available, providing vital information about STIs, prevention, and testing options.
Health officials are urging the public to take advantage of these resources and get tested, reinforcing that knowing one’s status is a crucial step in reducing the spread of STIs.
