Premier Dr. Natalio D. Wheatley departed earlier today for a 10-day Asian tour aimed at strengthening the territory’s position in global financial services.
The high-level meetings, scheduled for Feb. 16-21, will take place across major financial centres including Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Macau and Malaysia as part of the territory’s strategy to expand its presence in the Asia-Pacific region.
Speaking during a recent House of Assembly session, Premier Wheatley announced that his delegation includes Territorial At-Large Member Lorna Smith and Eighth Electoral District Member Marlon Penn.
Premier Wheatley also provided some insight into the projected gains from the tour.
Speaking on the BVI’s relationship with Asia, Dr. Wheatley highlighted the value the territory brings to the continent.
During Wheatley’s absence, Deputy Premier Julian Fraser will serve as acting premier from Feb. 14-17 before departing for the CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting. Communications and Works Minister Kye Rymer will then assume the role from Feb. 18-23.
The Virgin Islands government says the Asian mission reflects its commitment to promoting sustainable economic growth and maintaining its status as a leading international financial centre.
